At the early middle ages Zeist was a very small and quiet village. The peace and quiet was only now and then
disturbed by the wars between the Bishops of Utrecht and their many enemies.
At this time (around 1850) Aletta Voombergh lives with her parents and sisters at the country place "Hoog Beek en
Royen". Alette is the second daughter of Albert Voombergh, a merchant from Amsterdam.
After the defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte in 1815 all this changed. Wealthy merchants from Amsterdam became interested
in Zeist and bought land to built their houses on. Usually they built a large country seat, surrounded with a garden
or a park.
Aletta has a secret affair. She meets him in the woods, the parks and sometimes at a social event in the Castle of
Zeist.
Picture yopurself in this setting and find out who the secret lover of Alette is.
The walk (about 7km, 3 hours) will take you to a couple of country places in Zeist. Look out for traffic, you must
cross roads a couple of times.
Dogs are permitted on leash, and the area is accessible with baby carriages. Children will also enjoy this walk,
but do take some old bread with you to feed the animals during the walk.
Tip: before or after the hike: great pancakes at 't Jagershuys, at N 52 05.288 E 5 15.755

| - | NOTE: In august/september 2006 the cache has been ripped!!! You can follow the route, but you won't find a cache at the end. We don't know yet if we are going to find a new end location any time soon, because of the crowded places around our route... |
| 1. | Start at N 52.05.026 E 5.15.207 (you can park nearby). |
| 2. | Go to N 52.05.064 E 5.15.377 Count the number of petals of one big flower on top of the ball, on one
of the armrests of the bench (= A). At this moment you are in "Het Zeisterbos". These woods belonged to the country place "Beek en Royen". "Pavia" and "Hoog Beek en Royen" also belonged to "Beek en Royen". If her family thought Aletta was doing a little "beauty" sleep, she quietly left the house to meet her secret lover far from the house. They walked through the thick woods, occasionally hiding behind a tree. Trying not to be seen, because her father would like her to marry another gentleman. A son of a very rich and influential family: the family Stoop. Albert Voombergh's business was going down and he was hoping that the marriage of his daughter Aletta to Stoop would save him from ruin. |
| 3. | Go via N 52.04.978 E 5.15.449 Maybe you can catch a glimp of Aletta when she and her lover hide behind the trees... ;-) |
| 4. | to N 52.04.924 + A E 5.15.004 Here you will find a clue of the true identity of the lover (= B).
|
| 5. | Walk left around the house to N 52.04.824 E 5.14.507 + B Now you are at "Hoog Beek en Royen". From this point of view you are able to see the bedroom window of Aletta (window at the upper right corner). |
| 6. | Go to N 52.04.794 E 5.14.404 + B The family Voombergh often visited family Huydecoper in "Slot Zeist" (castle Zeist). Maria Christina Huydecoper was Aletta's best friend. But Maria was not the only reason Aletta often went to visit the castle. On her walk from her home at "Hoog Beek en Royen" to "Slot Zeist" Aletta
always saw the same animal, standing at the exact point where you are standing now. What animal did
she see:
|
| 7. | Go to N 52.04.686 E 5.14.8 x C + 104 While walking please pay attention to the following assignment: At the "Karpervijver" you see an old factory for silverware. The factory is
called "Gerritsen Van Kempen". Count the number of tools on the facade of the factory (D = number of
tools).
Now you are at the spot where young lads from Zeist used to hang out. Because from this spot they had a wonderfull view of the sitting room of "Slot Zeist". This is where Aletta was drinking tea while visiting the castle. The statue is in memory of two of her admirers: Willem Frederik Stoop (right) and Hendrik van Wieldrecht (left). Willem was the son of J.B. Stoop, a rich merchant from Amsterdam, owner of country place "Molenbosch". This place is situated next to "Hoog Been en Royen", so Stoop was a neighbour of Voombergh. Hendrik was Willem Frederik's cousin and also madly in love with Aletta. She was the reason for his numerous stays in "Molenbosch". Count the number of earrings (= E).
|
| 8. | Go to N 52.04.(680 + E) E 5.14.009 Note: the gardens around the castle close at 17.00hrs. But you can always walk along the canal around the castle. Count the number of flag poles (looking to the north) (= F).
|
| 9. | Go to N 52.04.(750 + F) E.5.14.093 What is the year the castle was build (= G) ? Sir Jan Elias Huydecoper owned the castle from 1830-1864. He had two children: a daughter Maria Christina (best friend of Aletta) and a son Adrianus Gerardus. |
| 10. | Go to N 52.04.(G - 746) E 5.14.342 This is the old municipal hall. When (year) did the mayor place a stone? Add the numbers of the year to
get number H.
|
| 11. | Go to N 52.04.817 E 5.14.444 + H Calculate the difference between the two years you can see here (= I).
|
| 12. | Go to N 52.04.(860 - I) E 5.14.730 (heading right via N 52.04.(842 - I) E 5.14.555) You are back at "Hoog Beek en Royen". Do you have any idea who stole the heart of Aletta? No ideas yet? Then go search the next clue. The one digit you see = J.
|
| 13. | Go to N 52.04.900 + I - H +(2 * J) + F E 5.14.900 - (2 * I) + H + (5 * J) You are now back at "Pavia". When you are still not sure you can answer the question that will lead you to the cache, then search here for an extra hint (look for a film case/tube). |
| 14. | Go to N 52.05.00C E 5.15.204 Look for a number (= K).
|
| 15. | With everything you've seen along this walk you must be able to answer the question: To whom did Aletta Voombergh marry in 1855? The right answer will lead you to the cache:
